Letters from family members, mainly Emeline Welton in Carlinville and Charles in Mt. Pleasant and Auburn, Iowa. Letters discuss family news and life on the farm. In one letter Charles talks of hard economic times and the bank closings. His 1851 letter discusses the flooding conditions in Iowa. Emeline writes of problems with renters and the difficulty in finding good people to help with housework. Charles writes a lengthy letter, 1871, discussing Republican politics in his county and the charges of fraud in the counting of votes. An 1876 letter mentions stopping in Philadelphia for the Exposition on a trip to New Hampshire.

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors.
